Pannonhalma

Since 1996 the thousand year-old Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma has been part of World Heritage Sites. The Baroque complex incoporates original Romanesque and Gothic structures.

The three-nave 13th-century basilica with its Gothic vault still stands today, including the lierne-vaulted sanctuary. The Romanesque crypt below preserves the oldest sections of the abbey.

The monastery evokes Baroque times. The most valuable part of the Baroque abbey is the library hall with its wooden columns. The 360,000-volume collection holds many rare codices and prints.

Crowned by the 55 metres high tower, the building complex of the archabbey belongs to the most well-known Classical structures in Hungary.

Benedictine monks continue to live and work at the archabbey. Therefore visiting individuals and groups may only visit the following sections of the heritage buildings: the basilica including the crypt, the ambulatory, and the library. A guide accompanies visitors on their tour of the World Heritage Site. An extra entrance fee applies to a guided tour of the abbey's wine cellars with a wine tasting. Other sights near the archabbey include the Assumption Chapel, the Millennium memorial, the arboretum, the park forest and the lookout all of which can be visited at any time without a guide.
