Safety and health in Hungary

Safety in Hungary

Everyday safety on streets, pubs, public places are good. Gang criminals are no common (eg. quite rare), major problem pickpockets, stealing in major tourist spots, on crowded buses/trams, maybe on trains.
Several safety issues :
- do not hold your passport with you all the time, if possible put into your hotel's safe
- never give you passport to anyone like conductors, security persons
- do you homework, google the net for blacklisted places

Blacklisted bars, restaurants, there are few in Budapest. The story is old, you take a seat, eat your meal, drink your drinks and get a huge sum of bill which you do not prefer, but the owner/waiter does. So in the end travellers get bashed, or forced to get out cash from ATM.
We really hope you do not get into these kind of situation (which is rare), but you can do several things to get avoid these kind of problems :

- check out the menu, try to memorize the prices!
- do not let strange pretty ladies invite you from the street
- if the problem occur, make a police report!

Taxi problems, there are less and less problems with taxies. Here's some tips, use hungarian forints to make payment to taxi drivers, as they like to use very interesting exchange rates if you pay by any other currency. Use fixed rated taxis (like Zona, but there are few others). During nightime, do not let the bar get you a taxi. Use your mobile or a public phone to order a taxi, so you have to notice at least 1-2 taxi numbers. If problem occur, do not go argument with the driver (as they will ask other driver's help), go and make a police report!

Travelling around in Hungary, as not many hungarian speaks other languages than their own, you may have some problem but hungarians are friendly with foreigners although they can not help all the time. Need a help? Contact Us and we help you (for FREE)

Health issues, Hungary

Tap water is drinkable in most of the places in Hungary, but if you feel more safe, drink mineral water. There are plenty kind (with bubbles and quiet) in every supermarket from around 30cents.

Had an accident? If you had an accident, broke your leg, arms, etc., and you are an EU citizen and have the EU citizens health card (you have to apply for it before you depart in your home country), you get free examination and hospital care. If you are not EU citizen than you will get a bill to pay before you go, than you have to discuss it with your own health insurance company. If you have an insurance, ask your insurance company before you go what does it cover, and how.

If you are not sure about health insurance and you need a medical examination right away, you can choose a private hospital. There are plenty in Budapest
BCH, Istenhegyi Klinika, Medicover, but you can find more on google.
