Boldogkovaralja

The castle of Boldogko built in the second half of the 13th century, appears high on a vast rhyolite tuff. THe castle first mentioned in 1295 as 'castrum Boldua'. Kinds of Hungary granted it to the Drugeths, the Czudars and the Szappolyai family and other barons. It changed hands several times in the 16th century.
Boldogko castle had an important role in stopping marauding Turkish troops leaving from the Hungarian Highlands. Imre Thokoly captured the castle in 1678, the Habsburgs took it back in 1697 and made it uninhabitable in 1702. It was restored in the 1960's.

Nowadays, Boldogkovaraja village and Boldgko Castle is open for public, the castle is a museum open everyday of the year. The inner castle partly rebuilt, so you can climb up to the top, where you can see wonderful panorama to the valley of Hernad river.
Museum displays great battles of hungarian history in miniatures, like the Muhi battle with the mongols army back in the 13th century.

How to get to Boldogko Castle

by car From Budapest, take M3 highway. Take exit at Miskolc and go along on 35th road till Satoraljaujhely,Around 280kms from Budapest
By train you take off at Miskolc and change train to Hidasnemeti/Kosice direction. Only slow trains stop!

Aron's Tips

Boldogkovaralja is one of the most beautiful located castles in Northern Hungary. Short trip from Miskolc by car, there are buses and trains as well, trains are better, buses are slow and rare, but you can find cheap guesthouses in the village. The medieval restaurant is a must if you are nearby!
