Lake Balaton is one of the most precious natural treasures of Hungary. It is the largest lake of Central Europe, its length is 77 kilometres and its width ranges from 4 to 14 kilometres. Do not sit in one place. Discover Lake Balaton, there are plenty easy and cheap ways to do it!
1. By train
There are train connection around Lake Balaton.
Pros :
The route sometimes quite scenic, fast (since the towns are close to each other), and quite cheap (for example : Siofok-Keszthely 2400HUF return) and the train frequency is good in summer.
Cons :
Trains usually a bit crowded in summertime. No airconditioning (although you can open all the windows). Trains are not the cleanest things (but do not count any horroristic). You have to buy tickets, look for timetables. (it is easy as ABC. Check out timetable

How to get to Lake Balaton?
By car
from budapest you can take M7 highway.
By train , check schedule
you can take InterCity train to Nagykanizsa, it will stop only a few station around the lake, or at "Deli" station (you can get there by red M2 underground) take any of the trains to Nagykanizsa, Siofok for the south side or to Keszthely for the north side.
By plane
directly to Balaton airport.
If you fly to Budapest airport you can hire car  or simply order a minibus service.
