Hungary
Hungary is a middle sized country (93000
sqm) in Central East Europe. Landlocked country but has its own "sea", the
largest lake in Europe , Balaton. The country's highest point
1014m, and called "Kekes". It is in the northern
part of the country at the Matra
Hills.
There are mainly plains in Hungary's south and
north western part. The Great Plain in the south called "Alfold" home of some
unique species and the last remaining plains in Europe, the Hortobagy.
There are two main rivers in Hungary, one is the
Danube which flows across Budapest, and the Tisza river which flows in the eastern part
of Hungary.
Both the Danube and the Tisza and the many other smaller rivers
offer great opportunity to take a tour by kanoe or boat.
Hungary also famous for its history. A quite small country
with a very rich and colorful history. From the old ages of the cavemans, whom
lived in the caves of Bukk and Matra , through roman empire and mogolians,
turkish empire, everybody had been here for a while. So you can find many
historical sites and sights in Hungary. Castles, churches, museums are
waiting for you to discover.
The innumerable beaches and baths are offered for not only families with children, but also for health-conscious visitors. Hungary has a number of spa springs yet to be exploited, but several aquaparks have been built on some of them including the bath in Hajduszoboszlo or Zalakaros which has been well-known for decades, as well as Heviz which is the largest hot water lake in Europe.
Another unique spa is the cave thermal in Miskolctapolca.
In the Great Plain you can still find people living in farms far from the towns, dealing with agriculture and breeding Hungarian grey cattle. In Bugac-puszta horse shows are held regularly, while in Hortobagy you can try the typical speciality of the region, the goulash soup, for instance in the inn next to the Nine-arch Bridge.
Hortobagy is part of the World Heritage due to its natural values and traditions, as well as the Old village of Holloko, where not only the houses reflecting the characteristics of folk architecture have preserved traditions, but also the inhabitants, as well. One of the folk traditions is the sprinkling on Easter Monday, an attraction not-to-be-missed, when the boys wearing national costumes chase the girls and water them with a bucket of water.
And don't forget Budapest, the capital of Hungary with its beautiful buildings, danube bridges, museums and sights. Budapest is a real buzzing city with great nightlife.
