Bukk Mountain

This central mountain range in northeastern Hungary is bounded by the River Sajo, the streams named Eger and Bán and the Great Hungarian Plain. The highest mountains are Istallos-ko (959m (3147ft) and Balvany (956m (3138ft). The center of the range forms a plateau some 20km (13mi.) long and 5km (3mi.) wide, with dense mixed woodland and beech forests, the home of many kinds of animals including deer, wild boar and some rare species of birds. In the Bukk Mountains over 300 caves have been discovered, some showing evidence of prehistoric settlement. The most valuable archaeological finds were made at Szeleta Cave near Lillafured, which provided men with shelter during the Ice Age.

National Park and Sights of the bukk

The Bukk National Park is one of the oldest in Hungary. The Bukk mountain is only visitable through its routes and tourist trails, but do not worry, there are many throughout the forests. Here we tried to collect some of the must see sights of the bukk

Felsotarkany
Felsotarkany is the next village from Eger to the bukk direction. You can find here the West Gate Learning and Displaying centre, where you can see major sights of the Bukk, how to seasons change the sight and the colors in photos and diaporamas. As the mountains have many caves and many caves offered shelter for the cavemen, you can see a museum of the tools and crafts were founded and a rebuilted cavemen cave, which try to display how they lived here in the Bukk mountain 10000 years ago.
Open from 15th Apr - 15th Oct from wednesday till sunday 10am till 4pm.

Lillafured
The St. Steven's (szent istvan in hungarian ) cave and the Anna cave.
The two caves can be found in the very popular relaxing place Lillafured only a few kms from Miskolc.
The St. Stevens cave is opposite the Ozon Pansion. The cave is a nice karst cave with huge halls and narrow corridors inside. You have to try it, it is a short 30mins walk with guide.
Open from 9am till 6pm, last tour at 5pm.

Oszlai display house Cserepfalu.
Cserepfalu is a small village at the foot of the hills. Oszlai display house is at the end of the village near the Odor fortress ruins. It is a typical peasant house with a exhibition inside, displaying cultural heritage of the 18-19th century.

Millenium Lookout Tower Szilvasvarad
The new lookout tower is located at the end of the millenium tourist trail on the top of a hill (long walk,but not hard). Offers a panoramic view over Szilvasvarad, the valley and the whole bukk region.
Open from 10am till 5pm, but closed in case of bad weather.
