Museums in Budapest

Budapest has over 100 museums, some big , but many small but unique and interesting museums.
Tickets are cheap, varying between 800-1200 HUF / adult, but there are many discounts like, the Budapest Card, or if you are pensioner over 62 you pay only half price and over 70 you can enter for free.
Children usually can enter free up to age of 6, as well as disabled persons with their escorts.
Important to know, that museums usually closed on mondays or sometimes on tuesdays as well.

Hungarian National Museum

Largest museum in Hungary, located in the downtown of Budapest. The impressive building houses several permanent exhibitions including the Crown of St Stephen, first king of Hungary and the Coronation Jewels, History of Hungary from St Stephen to the Millennium and History of Hungary in the 20th century.
Where can you find the National Museum in Budapest?
It is near the Astoria (accessable by red underground at Astoria station or by blue at Ferencziek tere station or bus number 7 from Keleti station, or on foot from Deak square just follow the tramline), at Muzeum korut in the 8th distict.

Museum of Fine Arts

Museum of Fine Arts can be found on the Heroes square. It has large collection of spanish and italian artists. Other highlights are the Egyptian, Greek and Roman displays. And the museum often has non permanent but very exciting shows.

Museum of Applied Arts

Museum of Applied Arts are opposite the Musem of Fine Arts on the Heroes Square. It has large collection of furniture, textiles, cermatics and woodworks from Hungary.

House of Terror

Located not far from the Heroes square on the Andrassy boulevard. The Terror House museum can be seen from its unusual roof from far.You can learn about the Nazi and Communist regime in Hungary, though some rooms convey a highly symbolic meaning that might not be clear to non-Hungarians.
Opening hours : Tue-Fri 10am till 6pm, Sat-Sun 10am till 7:30pm
Admission 1500HUF, 50% discount for children and elderly visitors, FREE for disabled visitors with their caretakers, FREE for students, over 65 pensioners and teachers on Sundays (you have to have a proof of ID).
Guided tours available 1300 HUF in english and german.

Museum of Ethnography

It is the largest ethnography museum in Europe. Here you can see the rich tradition of hungarian folk culture, as the permanent exhibition is the Traditional Culture of Hungarians.
The museum's building is one of the most beautiful of its type, worth an inner visit.
Temporarly exhibitions usually photo exhibitions, WorldPress photo and Hungarian Press photo during summer.

It is opposite the Parliament building on the Kossuth square, easily accessable by red underground (kossuth ter station).

Budapest History Museum

Learn about the Museum of Budapest! You can see reconstructed part of the medieval Royal Palace and some Gothic statues. The exhibitions provide a glimpse into the city's history from the the first settlers to modern Budapest.

The biggest collection of hungarian fine arts also can be found in the castle district.

budapest kiscell museum

Kiscell Museum

It is a small museum, but worth to visit, you can see great collection of paintings and graphical arts along its exhibition of the history of the modern Budapest.

Bela Bartok Memorial House

The museum is in the final Hungarian home of the world-famous Hungarian composer Bela Bartok (1881-1945). The interior reflects the time and atmosphere in which the composer lived. The house often hosts concerts.
