Gellert Hill and the Citadel

as you see along the Danube, on the Buda side, you will shortly notice the highest hill near the greenish Szabadsag bridge. It is the Gellert hill with the statue of Freedom on the top. Below at the foothill, there is the famous Gellert thermal bath. Nearby the Citadel, The Citadel was built as a military fortress on the highest point of Budapest’s city centre by Habsburg Austria, following the 1848-49 Revolution.

Bridges of Budapest


Chain Bridge

First bridge of Budapest, a historical monument has attracted many tourists to Budapest photographs or film of it illuminated at night with the imposing Buda Castle rising in the background, make for a breathtaking sight. Count Istvan Szechenyi commissioned William Tierney Clark to design the bridge and engineer Adam Clark to build it. Construction lasted from 1839-1849. The bridge did not escapte the destruction of the 2nd World War, and it was rebuilt in 1949 on it's 100th anniversary.

Liberty Bridge

Originally called Franz Joseph bridge, it was constructed in 1899 and rebuilt in 1946 after the 2nd World War. Latest renovation with LED lights, bike route was in 2009.

Elizabeth Bridge

In the year of its construction (1903) it was the world's longest suspension bridge. The bridge was named after the wife of Emperor Franz Joseph, HUngary's beloved Queen Elizabeth. German troops blew up the original bridge in 1945. The new bridge was designed by Pal Savoly and built in 1964.

Margareth Bridge

Named after the daughter of a once hungarian king , as the island which its leadin' on. Margareth Island can be reached through the bridge. Right now under reconstruction, but passing by is possible on foot or by tram (4,6).

Medicinal Baths & Spas of Budapest


Budapest is a city of medicial baths. Although baths from Roman times have bben uncovered in Budapest, the true bathing culture was initiated during the period of Turkish occupation in the 16-17th centuries. Even today there are some Turkish baths in the capital (Rudas, Rac, Kiraly and Csaszar) each one a masterpiece of Ottoman architecture.

Money and cost

Hungary is member of EU, but not using Euro as currency. The Hungarian currency is the Hungarian Forint (HUF). Hungarian banknotes are 20000, 10000, 5000, 1000, 500 and 200. Coins are 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1. If you bring Euro or Pound or Dollar and wish to change it to Forint, we recommend to bring your credit card or cashpoint card and get local Forint at ATMs. You get the best rates. Do not change money at individuals at train stations or at the street! Pls note cash is king in Hungary, although credit cards are accepeted at most of the shops and restaurants, if you are going to small shop, take a taxi or bus you better have cash. Little about the costs. Nowadays a bottle of beer is around 150 HUF at a normal supermarket. It is around 0.8 USD, 60eurocent, around 0.4 pound.

Tipping
Tipping is not generally practised, but waiters and waitresses, cabdrivers usually get 10-15%. Tip is not in the price at restaurants and bars.

Opening hours
Usually shops, banks are open from 8-9am till 4-5pm on working days. Supermarkets like TESCO, Auchan, Cora are longer. Tescos are nonstop

How to get to the city from the airport

By minibus or taxi
You can take airport minibus to the city or Taxi, or take on a citybus (single ticket can be purchased at the driver or at the newsagency on the arrival hall), to Kobanya Kispest metro station and take a metro.
Or another option if you are arriving to Ferihegy 1, to take the train to nyugati station. Cost 300HUF, takes 20mins.
