Fortress of Csesznek
Fortress of Csesznek is in ruins , similar to most of the other fortresses in Hungary, most of those've been destroyed by the Habsburg-Austrian army, but
many felt during the Turkish occupation (150years).
But thanks to its location, Csesznek is in quite good shape.
The Fortress of Csesznek was built after the mongol invastion in the 1200s. It is easily accessable by car from Veszprem on 82th road.
The fortress is very impressive, with its 2 storey palace, and part of the wall.
The reconstruction is ongoing since 1967, and they try to recover and rebuild the original view of the fortress.
There are summer games with medieval knight tournament, open theatre and music concerts during summertimes.
Csesznek is around 30mins driving from Lake Balaton.

Csobanc
Located near Tapolca, only few kms from Lake Balaton, near the village of Gyulakeszi. The fortress is on the top of a 376meters high hill. The so called old-tower is the oldest part of the fortress from the 13th century and the building completed in 1490. The Fortress on the top of Csobanc hill is a poplular tourist spot around the lake balaton.
Zalaszanto Buddhist Stupa
It is a must sight near the lake balaton. The budghist stupa in Zalaszanto, which is the largest stupa in Europe. Zalaszanto is on the way between Heviz and Sumeg on the northern side of the lake balaton. On the top of the 316 meters high Kovacsi hill, stand the 30meters high white stupa The gilt Buddha statue was sent from South Korea. His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the exiled religious leader of Tibet, was present at the inauguration of the stupa in 1993. Visiting the stupa is free

We tried to collect interesting, not that common sights around lake balaton. Fortresses of course, as Hungary is very rich in ruins, fortresses, castles from old times as old as 12th century. The Buddhist Stupa is an unique sight not in Hungary, but in Europe! All sights easy to access by car, but Csobanc can be reach by bike as well easily. Bike around Lake Balaton
